The types of lymphedema garments
Most people with lymphedema wear one garment during the day and a different one at night. Your therapist will recommend the right combination. Here is what each type does.
Circular-knit (ready-to-wear)
Seamless sleeves, gloves and stockings knitted on a round machine. Thinner and more discreet. A good fit for mild swelling and limbs with a regular shape. Available in standard sizes and some custom options.
Flat-knit (custom-made)
Made to your exact measurements and sewn with a flat seam. The knit is thicker and firmer, so it holds swelling in place better. This is the standard for moderate to severe lymphedema and for limbs with an irregular shape.
Adjustable wraps
Low-stretch wraps that close with hook-and-loop straps. You can tighten them as swelling changes, and they are easier to put on than a stocking. Used as an alternative to bandaging and for people who have trouble pulling on a garment.
Nighttime garments
Softer, padded or foam-channel garments worn while you sleep. They apply gentle pressure to stop swelling from coming back overnight. Daytime garments should not be worn to bed unless your therapist says so.
Hands, feet and toes
Gloves, gauntlets, toe caps and foot pieces that pair with a sleeve or stocking so swelling doesn’t collect in the hand or foot.
Trunk, chest and bras
Compression bras, vests and torso garments for breast, chest and trunk lymphedema, including after breast cancer surgery.

How getting your garments works
Common questions
Does Medicare cover lymphedema compression garments?
Yes. Since January 1, 2024, Medicare Part B covers standard and custom-fitted compression garments, wraps and bandaging prescribed for a lymphedema diagnosis. Your usual Part B deductible and 20% coinsurance apply.
How often can I get new garments?
Medicare allows 3 daytime garments or wraps per affected body part every 6 months and 2 nighttime garments per body part every 2 years. Other plans set their own limits, and we check yours.
What is the difference between daytime and nighttime garments?
Daytime garments apply firmer compression while you are up and moving. Nighttime garments are softer and padded so they are comfortable lying down and keep swelling from returning overnight.
Do I need custom or ready-to-wear?
It depends on your limb’s size and shape and how severe the swelling is. Ready-to-wear fits many people with mild swelling. Custom flat-knit is usually needed for moderate to severe lymphedema or an irregular limb shape. Your therapist will recommend one.
I also need a compression pump. Can you help?
Yes. Many patients use a pneumatic compression pump along with their garments. See our lymphedema pump page.
