TENS vs. NMES (EMS): what’s the difference?
TENS: pain relief
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation sends mild electrical pulses through pads on your skin to interrupt pain signals. Used for back, neck, joint, nerve and post-surgical pain.
NMES / EMS: muscle stimulation
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation makes muscles contract. It is used to help prevent muscle loss, rebuild strength after surgery or injury, and support rehab. Many Vive units combine TENS and EMS in one device.
Two ways to get your unit
Bill my insurance
Medicare and many plans cover TENS units for certain chronic or post-surgical pain when your doctor prescribes one. NMES coverage is more limited. We check your plan and contact your doctor.
Manufacturer warranty
Vive Health backs its TENS and EMS units with a guarantee of 60 days or 1 year, depending on the model. Each product listing shows the exact terms. If you have a problem, call us and we will help with the claim.
Common questions
Do I need a prescription?
Not to buy one for cash. To bill insurance, yes. We contact your doctor for you.
How often do I replace the pads?
Electrode pads wear out with use. Most people replace them every few weeks, depending on how often they use the unit and how they care for the pads.
Can I use it while sleeping or driving?
No. Use your unit only while you are awake and resting.
